9th RSC Hockey 9's

Mr. George Koshy presenting the Challenge Trophy
VVIP guests at the tournament

Mens Cup Champion - UniKL

UniKL, coached by former international K. Embraj took over from Sapura as the new winners of the 9th RSC Hockey 9's Tournament at the RSC Kiara Annexe last weekend. After 2 days of competition, UniKL met SJAA in the Cup category final and won 1-0 courtesy of a golden goal in extra-time. There was no shame in defeat for SJAA who put up a gutsy display against their more younger, skillfull and speedy opponents. In fact, SJAA shocked everyone by beating pre-tournament favourites KL Hockey Club in the semi-finals. KL Hockey Club boasted players like Chua Boon Huat, Ismail Abu, Megat Asrafiq and Robert Alcantra on their side but failed to live up to expectations. In the Plate category, Inter-Movers played intelligent hockey to outwit Chakde Hockey Club in the final. For the record, Inter-Movers is managed by RSC member James Andrew who played for the RSC Hounds. Barkerites from Singapore took the Bowl category title defeating the pilots from MAPA ( Malaysia Airlines Pilot's Association ) in the penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1. The evergreen Kevin Nunis who now resides across the causeway, not only scored the equaliser to force the shootout but also the winning penalty for the Singapore club. Among other ex-internationals who took part in the tournament were Datuk Poon Fook Loke, Colin Sta Maria, M.A. Sambu, Mahinder Singh, St.John Davies, Atul Kumar and Sunil Prasad plus a few more others. The final day of the tournament was attended by former MHF Deputy President Tan Sri Dato' Seri P. Alagendra and former national hockey team manager Datuk R. Yogeswaran. Mr. George Koshy presented the medals and trophy to the winners who also received a cooler box from sponsors UFL ( Universal Fitness & Leisure ) The Hockey Section of RSC would like to thank main sponsor Carlsberg Malaysia for their generous sponsorship. Special thanks also goes to all the participating teams especially those who came from abroad.

The 4th RSC Junior Hockey Tournament went on smoothly despite a short downpour which failed to deter the determined hearts of the youngsters. There were some promising performance from some of the juniors which augurs well for the future of Malaysian hockey. In the boys category, KL Boys emerged as Champions after a nail biting final. The game almost went into extra-time but the boys from KL managed to hold on for the win. RSC vs KL Bar - Full Report

RSC continue winning ways against KL Bar.

The RSC hockey team continued on its winning ways against KL Bar in the annual RSC/KL Bar games held recently. This fixture is amongst 7 games held annually, the others being soccer, cricket, badminton, netball, tennis and billiards.
The game was held on 10th July at the Bukit Kiara sports annexe immediately after the cricket game, which was won by KL Bar excitingly. Thus it was left to the hockey boys to save the series. And the hockey guys, as always, did not disappoint. The game started off on a frantic pace with the RSC forwards going for the early goal to settle all nerves. The KL Bar defense, held together by Anand Ponnudurai (also a RSC club player), were able to keep the RSC forwards at bay. The RSC forward line, led by M A Sambu, was constantly harassing the KL Bar defense and before long, it produced a goal. Off a KL Bar attack, our midfield broke down their attack and I. Vicki threw an overhead pass to Terence on the right wing. He sped down the flank beat a defender and crossed hard towards goal for the lurking Sambu to deflect brilliantly past the goalkeeper to put RSC 1-0 up. RSC kept up the relentless pressure on the KL Bar defense and it wasn’t long before RSC went 2-0. This time off a through pass from the left from Jonathan, our midfield general Dato’ Poon, picked up the pass, evaded one defender and placed it on a platter for his son, Nikki, to smash home the ball. By now the KL Bar guys were able to only provide some sporadic attack on the RSC goal. They did have an opportunity, when Sanjay (also a RSC club member) had time and space in the RSC semi-circle but in hastiness he shot wide. That was about the only chance KL Bar had on the RSC goal. The RSC midfield, manned by Dato Poon and I Vicki, were constantly supplying passes to the forward line and off a brilliant pass from Dato Poon, RSC went 3 –0 up. This time Dato Poon had time to settle on the ball, side stepped a defender and laid a pass to Alex Voon on the right wing. Alex had the ball in the “D” and placed the ball beyond the reach of the KL Bar goalkeeper with a swift shot. The second half was a tame affair as RSC were contented to hold on to the lead and play out time as the KL Bar forwards hardly were a threat to the RSC defence. Off a quick counter attack, Dato’ Poon found himself in the KL Bar “D” and he took a quick snap shot towards goal. As the ball was travelling towards goal, Nikki, came from the blind side of the goalkeeper to flick it past the bewildered and stunned goalkeeper. RSC 4 – 0. RSC then eased off and KL Bar managed to get a penalty corner in the dying moments of the game and Sanjay scored from the hit to make it 4 – 1. But in the end , the RSC hockey team’s win was in vain , as KL Bar managed to win 3 other games to emerge as champions again in the annual series. Though the score was tied at 3 – 3, but by virtue of being winners last year, KL Bar hang on to the overall trophy for another year.

Report prepared by Terence.

LAWYER'S LOSES IT'S CASE

RSC Mens's Hockey Section silenced KL BAR with a convincing 4-1 win yesterday in the Annual RSC-KL Bar games at the RSC Kiara grounds. RSC paraded a strong lineup with experienced players such as M.A. Sambu, Datuk Poon Fook Loke, I. Vickneswaran, Terence Rajasingham plus a handful other ex-state players. Former World Cupper Colin Sta Maria did not play due to a niggling thigh injury and called the shots from the sidelines.
A confident display saw RSC take a 3-0 lead within the first 20 minutes and that was enough to turn the lights out on KL Bar. In the second half, KL Bar produced a more spirited display but stout defending by the RSC defence kept the scoreline intact. Then, off a counter attack RSC scored it's 4th goal to kill off the match. There were some consolation for KL Bar though as they finally managed to get on the scoresheet with the last hit of the game via a penalty corner.
Final score : RSC 4 - KL Bar 1.

Jerantut Trip Update !

WELL DONE on a successfull and meaningful trip to Jerantut guys.

The response to the RSC coaching clinic in Jerantut was overwhelming. We were told to expect around 60 school kids. But when we turned up at the Jerantut town padang, we were taken aback to see 120 school kids waiting anxiously for us. This shows that there is interest in the game and all it needs is to lay the foundation well. We managed to conduct the coaching programme well within our time. This is all due to the good governance and execellent stewardship of our Dato Yoges. The assigned coaches, Sambu, St John Davies, Dato Poon together with the rest of players performed admirabily to handle the 120 kids. Our national coach, Stephen Van Huizen, imparted his knowledge to the teachers present there.Therein lies the future of hockey in Jerantut. Our Convenor, James Sia, was in his busy element taking photos, meeting with the officials and ensuring all was in order. We were fortunate to have with us Letchi ( MAS IFS) who also aided in taking photos of the kids in action. And the kids that tagged along with the parents, they also joined in the coaching programme. So all in all, it was a successful programme, as in one way or another all who travelled contributed a small part. No one person can claim to have a major share.
To those of you who missed out on the trip, we sincerely hope that you will be able to make it next year.
