RSC JHDP 30 June 2012

The boys started arriving at 5pm but had to wait on the sidelines until the cricket game was over... a good turnout of 60+ eager boys and girls!

Coach Prakash and Juswinder were assisted by Jay Ooi, James Andrew, Ommen Koshy and Charles Lim.

We'll let the photos do the talking...!

11th RSC Hockey 9’s 2012 (14-17 July) and 6th RSC Hockey Junior Tournament 2012 (13 July)

The 11th RSC Hockey 9’s will be held on the 14th & 15th July 2012 at the Bukit Kiara Sports Annexe. As usual, the teams will comprise of a mix of social hockey players, ex-internationals and maybe even a few current internationals!

The Junior tournament will also be held this year on 13th July (2-7pm) at the same venue. This tournament serves as an important avenue to provide a competitive yet friendly environment for our future hockey stars.

The organising committee needs volunteers for these tournaments, especially with the running of the event on the tournament days. All interested members may contact Ommen Koshy at koshy@skrine.com or +60 12 283 6586 for more information or to register as a volunteer.

RSC Weekly Sessions

by Jay Ooi

Unknown to most members of RSC, the hockey section has it's weekly practise sessions twice a week at the Tun Razak Hockey Stadium in Jalan Duta.

It is held every Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm to 8.30pm. Most of the regular RSC hockey boys and sometimes girls will turn out in full force to get their weekly work out, as well as the weekly fix of the cool amber liquid after the games.

Friendly matches are arranged with other social clubs to give our guys match practise. Depending on the oppositions, games are sometimes competitive but most are on a friendly sociable pace.

We have Malaysia's very own hockey legend, Dato Poon Fook Loke turning up without fail for every game. One has to admire the man, for he is now in his 60's and yet still a delight to watch on the pitch, though at times he can be a pain because of his incessant shouting of orders to his fellow players. Ask any of the guys and they will tell you that Dato is a sight for sore eyes because he is the one who makes sure that refreshments are ever present after every practise session. What dedication I tell you!

Another chap you will see at the session is Bobby Ho. A senior member of the section, you will see him chasing after opponents during a match. Maybe it's due to the fact that he is either getting a wee bit older in age or he could be confused by Dato's shouts.

Colin Sta Maria is another regular every week. An ex international and former coach of Malaysia, he is the captain of RSC Hockey. Always leading the RSC Dogs, you'll see him dribbling past one, two, even three players of the opposition, whilst orchestrating our team's attack! Still packing a hefty shot, Colin without fail will score regularly for the team.

Also joining is K. Mohan, the last man or defender of the team – the sturdy rock in defence, though nowadays a bit slower in stopping the younger opponents. But stop them he will, by all means possible!

Then there's the MAS boys as they're fondly referred to due to their professional association with the airline. Johnathan, Casey, Bernard, Alex and Capt Azman will pop in if their schedule permits.

Our "Jamaican import" Judith tends to drop by if she's ever in town as well.

We use to have George Koshy joining us in the past but maybe due to his work commitments, he has not been present of late.

There are plenty of other colourful characters who join in the fun as well!  So, if ever you are free and thinking of having a good sweat on Tuesdays and Thursdays, you are most welcome to drop by and join the guys for some fun.

Don't worry about not having the right equipment or not knowing the game. Just bring along your running shoes and take the first step. We guarantee you will not have any regrets.

16th Penang Sports Club (PSC) International Hockey Fest

This veterans tournament saw 7 of our section members taking the drive up to the Pearl of the Orient to participate in the 16th edition of this tournament.

They played their hearts out... then MAKAN like there's no tomorrow, and made Penang proud of their reputation as the best makan destination in Malaysia!

Discovery of the weekend - PSC has great food! (so swears our Convenor, James Sia!)

Check it out at http://www.pgsportsclub.com.my/fb.htm

More news to come once the 'report' is out....

RSC JHDP - 3rd Training Session (16 June 2012)

With the kids back to school, the RSC JHDP went on full steam!

Despite the lack of section members turning up this session (due to the Penang International Hockey Fest), the coaches were there and the kids had fun, as usual.

We hope more section members will lend their support and help out in the next session this Saturday (23 June 2012) at 5pm, Kiara Sports Annexe.

RSC JHDP - 2nd Training Session (9 June 2012)

Complications with the booking of the Kiara Sports Annexe field leading up to the weekend and the school holidays did not dampen the spirits of the 62 kids who turned up for the 2nd RSC JHDP training session.

Lessons from a legend - Dato Poon!
Our 4 coaches (Prakash and Prakash, Louis Gregory and Jay Ooi) and 7 section members (Siva Subramaniam, James and James, Dato and Datin Poon, Judith and Tham) thoroughly enjoyed themselves teaching the basics of hockey and mingling with the kids at our 'home ground'.

Looking forward to seeing more section members join us in the next training session on 16 June 2012 (Saturday), 5-7pm at Kiara Sports Annexe.

Kejohanan Hoki Veterans PHBI 2012 - 3 June 2012

Early Sunday morning, 3 June 2012... long before Dato Poon was awake (Yes, were all there by 8.15am!), we gathered at Stadium Azlan Shah for Kejohanan Hoki Veterans PHBI 2012. This was a friendly tournament in conjunction of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.

We dreamt of playing on the blue pitch!

But we got the green pitch instead...
Led by our Captain Bobby Ho, who played with a suspected fractured hand, we won 2 games and lost 1.

Deprived of breakfast and lack of sleep, Convenor James Sia performed well to let in only 2 goals... whilst the others just wanted to get on with the games and get out of the sun... and swiftly proceeded to the next agenda - lunch and drinks!

Representing RSC.... our veterans!

Cloth grip, Maharadja,
Wood, Grass...
Definitely a  veteran stick!

The friendly atmosphere with lots of goading and teasing among the veterans, followed by the catching up of old friends was what we came here for. Thanks to PHBI for organising the tournament!

(We found out much later that we apparently emerged as Champions of this friendly tournament!)

Malaysia is 6th

On a very hot Sunday afternoon, Malaysia slugged it out with Korea on the blue pitch at Stadium Azlan Shah, Ipoh in the 5th/6th Placing classification match.
Welcome to The 21st Sultan Azlan Shah Tournament!

The fans!
The much faster Koreans outran and outplayed our Malaysian boys and we succumbed 2-3, despite the late fight back and a barrage of attacks in the Korean "D".

Final standings - (1) New Zealand (2) Argentina (3) India (4) Great Britain (5) Korea (6) Malaysia (7) Pakistan
